My First Live Fight I Attended

The first time I went to see a fight in person was on Saturday, August 7, 1982 at the Spectrum in south Philadelphia. I left my job early from the airline job I had, and made it in plenty of time to see the main event. I paid $25 to see the rematch between Matthew Saad Muhammad and Dwight Braxton. With binoculars in hand I took my seat in the upper deck at the arena.

Braxton had taken the WBC light heavyweight championship in December of 1981 with a tenth round TKO of Muhammad. I liked Matthew and the loss stung. I knew Braxton was tough however, and was kind of nervous when the opening bell rang.

It was really never a contest as Braxton swarmed Muhammad from the opening bell. He was aggressive and hurt him on several occasions before stopping him again via TKO in the 6th round. I left disappointed in the results, but had thoroughly enjoyed my first time to see a fight in person.
