When Rocky IV was released into movie theatres on Thanksgiving Eve of 1985, I was amongst the first in line to see it. I had been a serious boxing fan for more than five years, and nothing was more exciting to see in the movies than a Rocky movie.
While it was good and the training scenes were inspiring, it fell short in the inspiration department compared to Rocky 3. While the boxing scenes in all of the pictures are scripted and theatrical, this movie’s were almost comical. I couldn’t keep track of all the knockdowns, and I found the ending sappy and foolish. The movie was good up until the fight started, but that’s went it went quickly downhill.
I left the movie a bit disappointed but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I think I saw it another two times in the theatre, but a far cry from the 11 times I saw Rocky 3. I was more interested in the real life ring news, and with the holidays around the corner, the schedule was quiet. Most fighters don’t want to fight at Christmas , and promoters usually wait until the new year to put on cards.
