Trevor Berbick was a Jamaican pro boxer who moved to Canada and won their heavyweight title. He came to prominence in 1980 on the undercard of the first Leonard-Duran fight in Montreal by knocking out former WBA champ John Tate. The following April he went the 15 round distance with WBC champ Larry Holmes and remained a top contender for most of the 1980’s.
He even won the WBC belt on March 22, 1986 by upsetting champ Pinklon Thomas via a 15 round unanimous decision. His title reign was brief however, when faced off with a young, ferocious Mike Tyson in Las Vegas. Tyson annihilated him in two quick rounds and won his first championship belt, becoming the youngest in history.
Five years later, on December 11, 1981, Berbick would be Muhammad Ali’s last opponent. He handed ‘The Greatest’ his final loss and a link between eras had been forever linked.
