Holyfield vs. Holmes

Evander Holyfield had agreed to fight the winner of the Ray Mercer vs. Larry Holmes fight on February 7th, 1992. Most so called experts had picked Mercer to win easily, but Holmes surprised them in a big way. The ex-champ totally outboxed Mercer enroute to an easy 12 round unanimous decision in Atlantic City. He signed to fight Evander instead, and it was set for June 19th in Las Vegas.

The critics lambasted Holyfield for fighting another 42 year old ex champ instead of one the younger contenders. It wasn’t Evander’s fault that Mercer had lost, and only fought who the promoters put in front of him.

Another trip to the Pavilion in Cherry Hill for this one, but I wasn’t expecting much. My low expectations were met, with Evander winning most every round. The only thing Holmes did to hurt Evander was land an elbow on his eye that opened a huge gash. Most also remember Larry vomiting into his corner as the fight ended. It was a dud of a fight, and a Riddick Bowe was on the schedule for fall for Holyfield.
