It was not long after his first loss as a professional to Riddick Bowe, that Evander Holyfield made plans to come back. He did take a beating in losing his title to Bowe, so a few months lapsed before he announced an opponent. Alex Stewart was picked, the same fighter he fought in November of 1989 and stopped via TKO in the 8th round.
The bout took place on June 26th, and like the first one, took place in Atlantic City. I went over my brother’s house again to watch it on pay-per-view, and didn’t expect much. What I remember most about that night was that the main event started well after midnight eastern time, and I fought off sleep to see it.
Evander bulked up to 212 lbs. and looked great physically. The fight itself was a snooze fest, with the ex champ winning almost every round, and capturing an easy unanimous decision.
He had his comeback win under his belt, and talks of a Bowe rematch were set for fall. That fight for sure would be better than this one was.
