Foreman vs. Lyle

The George Foreman vs. Ron Lyle bout set for January 24, 1976 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. George was out to restore his name after the loss to Muhammad Ali in October of 1974. His exhibition against five fighters in April of 1975 did little to do that, so this was his first real chance to earn the respect he longed for.

Lyle on the other hand had lost to Ali on May 16, 1975 in a respectable performance, and followed that with a knockout of Earnie Shavers in
September. His fight with Foreman promised to produce fireworks, and it didn’t disappoint.

Both men came out throwing bombs, and hurt each other throughout fight. Ron put George on the canvas more than once, and Foreman returned the favor. It was one of the best slugfests in heavyweight boxing history, and was thrilling to watch.

Finally, late in the fifth round, Foreman cornered Lyle, and landed an assault of lefts and rights that dumped him on the floor, and unable to continue. George had worn a robe into the ring that said ‘Heart of a Lion’ on the back, and this performance displayed just that. It also restored his name to the top of the heavyweight contender list, and renewed his confidence that he could regain the title.
