Lennox Lewis Part 10

dd

Lennox Lewis made his next title defense in Atlantic City on March 28, 1998 against Shannon Briggs. Briggs was coming off of a controversial decision win over George Foreman, which I saw as highway robbery. Based on that win, he made his way into the ring at Atlantic City Convention Hall to challenge Lewis for his WBC heavyweight crown.

Briggs fought well in the opening round, and hurt Lewis late in it, sending him into the ropes. Lennox survived the round, and landed two hard shots before it ended. The second round saw Briggs aggressive as well. but Lewis grabbed him to nullify it. The champion began landing hard shots as the third round progressed, and was dominating the action on HBO.

Lewis dropped Briggs twice in the fourth, and I knew it was a matter of time. The third knockdown came in the fifth, and the end followed not long after when the referee stopped the action after Briggs threw a left hook, missed and fell down. It was mistakenly called a knockdown, and however wrong it was, it ended the bout.

Briggs had showed bravery and grit, but Lennox had proved himself to be the better fighter. Talks of a fight with Evander Holyfield were in the air, and I knew eventually both would meet.
