HBO Memories Part 8

Here is my continuing list of fights I watched on HBO over the years,

36. Riddick Bowe vs. Michael Dokes. February 6, 1993. Over to Lisa’s house again to catch Riddick Bowe’s first defense of his heavyweight championship at the Garden in New York. His opponent was the worn out Michael Dokes, who had a history of drug abuse, and no chance at all to win. It was his last chance at glory, but it didn’t last long. Riddick overwhelmed him, and knocked him out with just seconds left in the opening round.

37. James Toney vs. Iran Barkley. February 13, 1993. I tuned into this one at Lisa’s to hopefully see Iran Barkley upset James Toney. I didn’t like Toney from the outset, with his cockiness and foul mouth. Even though he was talented, I hoped Iran could shut his trap for me. Unfortunately, Toney was too much for Barkley from the start, and stopped him in the ninth round at their fight from Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.

38. Pernell Whitaker vs. Buddy McGirt. March 6, 1993. I really liked Pernell Whitaker, but knew that Buddy McGirt was a tough opponent when they met at Madison Square Garden. Both men could box, and it was a close and competitive battle throughout. ‘Sweet Pea’ outpunched McGirt enough to win his decision though, and retain his welterweight belts.

39. Riddick Bowe vs. Jesse Ferguson/Roy Jones Jr. vs. Bernard Hopkins This doubleheader from RFK stadium in Washington, DC was an entertaining one for sure. Roy opened the show with a dazzling boxing display against a talented Bernard Hopkins. Jones most every single round, enroute to an easy win, and captured his first championship, the IBF middleweight belt. In the main event, Bowe overwhelmed Jesse ‘The Bogeyman’ Ferguson, easily knocking him out in the second round. He talked of giving Evander Holyfield a rematch in the fall, and it was certainly something to look forward to.

40. Roy Jones vs. Thulani Malinga. August 14, 1993. The bout from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi was a showcase of Roy’s talent for sure. Jones knocked his opponent out with a left hook combination in the sixth round, and left you wanting to see him again. He was a special boxer, and with his frame, you knew he could move up and win titles in several weight classes.
