The Top 5 Knockouts of Roy Jones

This is My List of the Top 5 Knockouts of Roy Jones.

  1. Roy Jones vs. Vinny Pazienza. June 24, 1995. Atlantic City Convention Hall; Atlantic City, New Jersey. After his decision win over ancient Roberto Duran in January of 1995, Vinny Pazienza pursued, and got a bout with Roy Jones for the IBF Super-Middleweight title. To me, the 12-1 underdog would have needed a machine gun to defeat Jones. I did think however, that Vinny would go the distance, since the little bugger was as tough as they come. Watching the pay-per-view that June on my 46 inch projection TV, I was shocked when Roy actually knocked Pazienza out as the 6th round came to an end. To me, it is the best knockout of Roy’s professional career.
  2. Roy Jones vs Montell Griffin 2. August 7, 1997. Foxwoods Resorts; Ledyard, Connecticut. After Montell Griffin won their first bout by disqualification in the 9th round on March 21, 1997, both men agreed to a rematch 5 months later. When I ordered the pay-per-view that Thursday night in August, I expected the ‘RJ’ in Jones to appear, his alter ego with an attitude of ‘Seek and Destroy’. Jones did just that in the opening round, by landing a sizzling left hook that knocked Griffin down and out. Jones had his vindication, and was back on top of the light heavyweight division where he belonged.
  3. Roy Jones vs, Virgil Hill. April 25, 1998. Mississippi Coast Coliseum; Biloxi, Mississippi. Virgil Hill had been an excellent light-heavyweight champion for a number of years, but when he fought a prime Roy Jones that spring night in 1998, he met the same fate as many others had. Roy ended Hill’s night with a single thudding right hand to his side, which laid him out on the canvas, rolling around in pain. It is one of the greatest body shots in boxing history, delivered by the best fighter on the planet for 10 years.
  4. Roy Jones vs. Bryant Brannon. October 4, 1996. The Theatre at Madison Square Garden; New York, New York. Bryant Brannon was a spirited, muscular, fireball of a fighter who was reduced to an amateur the night he face Roy Jones. Roy toyed with him for two rounds, then finished Brannon off with a spectacular combination that only he could land. With every time out, Jones left little doubt who the pound for pound king was.
  5. Roy Jones vs. Merqui Sosa. January 12, 1996. Madison Square Garden; New York, New York. I was in Vegas the night of this bout, and wanted to bet some money on Roy, but unfortunately no casino had posted odds. Wanting to see the fight, I went to a seedy hotel off the strip, paid my $40 so I could watch it on HBO. Jones got rid of Sosa in 2 quick rounds, and despite the challenger’s complaints, got knocked out fair and square. The best thing that happened to me that weekend was winning $600 on poker slot machines, enough to cover the cost of my trip, so I went home to snowy New Jersey happy.
