Roy Jones Jr. had his gold medal robbed from him at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea and on May 23,1993 went to RFK Stadium in Washington, DC to fight for his first world title. His opponent was the tough Philadelphia fighter Bernard Hopkins but their bout was not the main event, but the opening fight on HBO, with Riddick Bowe’s title defense against Jesse Ferguson.
Jones was spectacular for all twelve rounds, easily outboxing and outpunching Hopkins enroute to an easily unanimous decision win. I agreed with Harold Lederman’s card, who scored the bout 118-110 for Jones. There was something special about Jones, and he impressed me more every time he stepped into the ring. His speed and punching power were almost supernatural at times, and this first title belt would the first of many he would add to his collection over the next decade.
On May 23, 1993, Roy Jones Jr., showed to the entire boxing world in emphatic fashion how great he really was for the first time.
