Angelo Dundee was born as Angelo Mirena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1921. He cut his teeth as a boxing trainer in the New York city gyms, and trained many world champions in his lifetime. He came to prominence however, as the trainer for 3 time heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. He was Ali’s trainer from 1961 until his last fight with Trevor Berbick in December of 1981. Loyal to Muhammad from beginning to end, he stuck with him during his 3 and a half year ban from the sport, until his tragic exit at the end.
His second most popular fighter was Sugar Ray Leonard. After leaving the 1976 Olympic games with a gold medal and turning pro in February of 1977, Dundee was with Ray from his first fight as a pro until his memorable defeat of Marvin Hagler in 1987. Boxing is packed with memorable trainers in it’s history, but the most famous of all is the man his fighters called Angie, Angelo Dundee.
