Charles ‘Sonny’ Liston

Try and find a birthday for Sonny Liston and you can’t. He himself said he didn’t know it. He grew up under difficult circumstances to say the least. He spent 2 years in prison from 1950 to 195, and turned pro the following year. His age was estimated to be about 25 at the time, but no one really knows. He starting compiling an impressive number of knockouts, and his plank of a left jab and punching power in both hands made people take notice. By the late 50′, he was knocking out top rated fighters, and the champions wanted nothing to do with him. In my opinion had Rocky Marciano remained champion past 1956 and fought Liston, he would have suffered the first loss of his career, and it would have been by knockout. At a little over 6′ 1″ and 215 lbs., Sonny was a fighter to be feared and for good reason. Floyd Patterson would soon find out.
