Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran signed to meet at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas on November 10th, 1983. I wasn’t thrilled about the bout to be honest, but paid to see it on closed circuit tv at a nearby hotel ballroom. I did have the privilege of meeting the recently retired great Alexis Arguello when I went to the hotel in advance to buy my ticket. He was in town promoting the contest, and I had a snapshot taken with the champ.
I never liked Duran, and it was not hard to decide who I would be rooting for. It would turn out to be the worst experience I ever had at a closed circuit fight however, since the ballroom was cramped and the seats were jammed together.
The fight itself to me was a dud, since Hagler never went in for the kill and gave Duran way too much respect. Roberto was slick and did better than most expected, but could never hurt Marvin. In the end it was a 15 round decision for Hagler, and I quite frankly went home disappointed in the whole thing.
