Hercules

Mike Weaver was a 6 foot 1 inch heavyweight boxer from Gatesville, Texas who had a mediocre record in the late 70’s by the time he fought champ Larry Holmes in June of 1979. Weaver gave Holmes all he could handle before being stopped in the 12th round. The spirited effort showed that he had improved much as a professional, and had a future in the division.

The boxer with the spectacular muscular physique that earned him the nickname ‘Hercules,’ recovered from the loss to Holmes with 2 solid victories in the fall of 1979 to put himself in line for another title shot. In the heavyweight division especially, you are always just a single win from redemption more than other divisions it seems. That would prove so for Mike as much as anyone.
