Holmes vs. Cooney

The biggest fight talked about in years finally took place on Friday June 11, 1982 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both brought undefeated records into the ring, with Holmes at 38-0 and Cooney at 25-0.

One of the most disrespectful things ever done to a reigning heavyweight champion was done to Larry Holmes that night, when they introduced him first, and gave Cooney the honor normally reserved for a champ by announcing him last.

The first round action began with Holmes on his legs boxing, and Cooney pursuing him. A sharp right hand by the champ dropped Gerry in round 2, and the fight had begun.

To me it was evident that Holmes was the superior fighter, and even though Gerry landed an occasional hard left hook, Larry was in control throughout the bout. By round 13, Cooney wore down, Holmes dropped him and the fight was stopped. Larry retained his title, and finally earned the respect he deserved by the boxing public.
