Lennox Lewis was born on September 2, 1965 in London, England. At 12, he moved with his mother to Ontario, Canada where he excelled in football, basketball and soccer. In 1978, he took up boxing, and won numerous amateur titles. He represented Canada in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, where he lost to Tyrell Biggs in the quarter finals.
Lennox chose to remain an amateur after the loss, and improved under his coaching staff. He won many amateur championships, and traveled to Seoul, South Korea to compete in the 1988 Olympic games. He defeated Riddick Bowe as a super-heavyweight via a second round stoppage. Lewis became the first Canadian boxer to win a gold medal since 1932 with the victory over Bowe.
Lennox moved back to England, and turned professional in 1989. He defeated Al Malcolm in June in his pro debut, and fought five more times to round out the year. With his size and talent, the future was only bright.
