My brother had come over to watch the fight at my house on my big screen projection tv, and we were both voting for Evander to win. I never for a minute bought into his prophecy nonsense, and knew he would have a very difficult time with the 6′ 5′ talented Lewis.
From the opening bell at Madison Square Garden, Lennox was the aggressor, and seemed in control. He easily landed jabs and won the first two rounds, leading up to the much hyped third round. When Jim Lampley asked George Foreman about Holyfield’s prophetic prediction, he answered saying “That’s why Evander is wearing those gloves with the high pad, to protect himself.” George wouldn’t even answer Jim’s question, and give credence to what he knew was baloney.
The crowd came to it’s feet in the third round when Holyfield landed a glancing blow to Lennox’s head, backing him into a corner. He was never hurt, and quickly fired back his own shots. Lampley announced, “10 seconds left in the prophecy!”, as the round came to an end. I found it comical, and also stupid, that Evander made a mockery of God by spouting such garbage.
Lewis dominated most of the fight, and I gave Holyfield three rounds at the very most. He was outclassed, outpunched, and beaten soundly by the better fighter, plain and simple. What followed, was sickening to say the least.
Three buffoons, not judges called the bout a draw, robbing Lennox of his moment of glory, and it was sad. He handled it with class however, as opposed to Evander, who refused to acknowledge defeat, and talked of a rematch. I was embarrassed to be his fan at that moment, and was disgusted by his ego.
Larry Holmes once said judges get paid off and are bribed, and this fight was proof of his claim. The fact that Don King was the promoter made it ever more clear, and it was why many people didn’t follow boxing anymore. After this crap, I couldn’t blame them.
