After his decision win over Tony Tucker in May, Lennox traveled back to England to make a title defense against fellow Brit, Frank Bruno in Cardiff, Wales. Bruno was beloved in England, and many were loyal to him, and in his corner when the two boxers met on October 1st. I tuned into the bout on HBO, and personally was voting for Lennox to knock Bruno out.
Frank had his moments, and rocked the champ on a few occasions. Lennox didn’t get rattled, and started to overwhelm Bruno by mid-fight, stopping him in the seventh. It was a solid performance in my book, however in boxing, the critics always have their say.
The following month, the bout many wanted to see, fell apart. Riddick Bowe lost his rematch with Evander Holyfield in Las Vegas, and the showdown between the two Olympic rivals was off. Sometimes in life, you can just wait too long.
Lennox traveled back to the states, and took on Phil Jackson in Atlantic City, New Jersey on May 6, 1994. He handled him with little resistance, and finished him in the eighth. Many now saw Lewis as a threat to Evander Holyfield’s championship title, and only time would tell if the two would actually meet in the ring.
