Lennox Lewis Part 6

On October 7, 1995, Lennox Lewis met Tommy Morrison in Atlantic City, New Jersey in a bout dubbed ‘Laying It All On the Line’. Mills Lane refereed the contest, the first time he did it in the Garden State. I sat down to view the action on my big screen projection on HBO, and quite frankly, gave Morrison no chance at all. Lewis was too big, and too strong, and the much more talented fighter overall. If there were odds on it, and I was a betting man, I’d have laid everything I owned on Lennox, I was that sure.

The bout went pretty much like I had figured. After a slow first round, Lennox dropped Tommy to one knee late in the second. He dropped him again in the fifth, cut his eye badly as well, and ended it with two more knockdowns in the sixth. It was a one-sided mismatch, and went pretty much like I had suspected. I never thought Morrison had the goods to be heavyweight champ, with a lousy chin, and a history of losing big fights.

This easy win restored Lewis’ image to the boxing public, and he set his eyes on another shot at the title. With George Foreman holding one belt, and Bruce Seldon and Frank Bruno the other two, I knew neither of the three would ever give him a shot.

The year of 1996 would be a huge year for Lennox. It would determine which way his future would go, and as the year began, no one knew for sure where that would be.
