Leonard is Back

After the colossal upset of Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard returned to the top of the sport once again. He graced the cover of every boxing magazine, and enjoyed the limelight that came with the huge win.

Talks of a rematch never really took hold, and Marvin went into retreat. The fact that he never gave Ray credit and whined that he had been robbed constantly pretty much convinced Leonard to never fight him again.

Sugar Ray returned to his HBO commentating job, and when questioned about his future, was very vague. He enjoyed basking in the glory that came with the upset win, and hinted of retiring again.

Ray stayed dormant for the remainder of 1987 and most of 1988. He hand picked WBC light-heavyweight champion Donny LaLonde as his target, but at the 168 super middleweight limit. Desperate for the fight, LaLonde agreed and a November date was set.
