Lewis vs. Ruddock

After Riddick Bowe defeated Evander Holyfield on November 13, 1992, the WBC stripped him of their championship belt when Bowe refused to commit to fight top contender Lennox Lewis.

Lewis was set to fight Razor Ruddock on October 31st in London for the vacant WBC belt. To see this HBO bout, I went over my sister’s house and was expecting a tough, evenly fought match. Both men were big and strong and talented, and I expected fireworks.

Lennox Lewis was the only one who provided the fireworks. He dropped Ruddock with a sizzling right hand with just 10 seconds left in the opening round. He dropped Ruddock again early in the second, and jumped right on him as soon as got up. The referee had no choice but to stop the action, and boxing an exciting new champion in Lennox Lewis.

Lewis was good looking, friendly, and had a pleasant personality. His future was only bright and boxing in the 90’s would only be better for it.
