After the letdown of the Leonard fight, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, now his legal name, made new plans. His first time in the ring would be in Boston, Massachusetts against Brit Tony Sibson. Hagler easily disposed of him with a 6th round TKO, and solidified his place as one of the top names in the sport.
Now an HBO fighter, Marvin had the limelight pretty much all to himself. He destroyed Wilford Scypion in Providence with a 4th round KO on May 27th ,and was now calling the shots. His summer was quiet, and by by fall he had a new name on his schedule. Living legend Roberto Duran, fresh off his defeat of WBA junior middleweight champ Davey Moore in June, had found redemption from his embarrassing loss to Leonard by taking home a new belt. The bout between the two was set for November, but I didn’t think much of it. Duran was small and Hagler was too tough, and I figured he would walk right through him.
