Michael Spinks Moves Up

By 1985, I had been a Michael Spinks fan for four years. I had seen most of his title defenses on television, and he was one of the few undisputed champions in boxing. I had the opportunity to take the ‘Trip of a Lifetime’ in the summer of 1985. I was in Los Angeles for nearly six weeks, from late July until Labor Day. It was a vacation I will never forget, and cherish the memories until this day.

On my way back home, I drove to Las Vegas with my rent a car, and booked a room at the old Dunes hotel on the strip. Michael Spinks was holding public workouts daily at the Riviera hotel, and I made my way there to see him. Larry Holmes had also been holding public workouts, but had closed them after an argument with New York sportswriter Dick Young. At least I could see Michael train.

The bout was set for September 21st at the Riviera, and I saw the workout about 3 weeks prior to the fight. Michael looked bigger and like he had put on some muscle in person. He sparred 7 or 8 rounds, worked the bags, jumped rope and did some floor exercises. Afterwards he sat down to sign autographs, so I bought a black and white photo of him, and waited in line. I asked Michael what he planned to weigh on fight night, and he answered “Whatever I feel comfortable at.”

He was gracious and it was a great way to end my vacation.

As far as the fight with Holmes, I was really torn, because I liked both guys. When the night came, I figured I’d watch it and deal with the outcome.
