This is a List of My Top Closed Circuit Fights. Part 2.
- Marvin Hagler vs. Thomas Hearns. April 15, 1985. Caesar’s Palace Outdoor Arena; Las Vegas, Nevada. Marvin knocks out Thomas Hearns in a 3 round war, and puts himself on top of boxing, as the best fighter on the planet.
- Marvin Hagler vs. John Mugabi. March 10, 1986. Caesar’s Palace Outdoor Arena: Las Vegas, Nevada. Hagler stops the ‘Beast’ in 11 rounds, and cements his place as the king of the ring. Rumors of a fight with Leonard surface a few months later, and Hagler agrees to the mega-fight for the spring of 1987.
- Marvin Hagler vs. Sugar Ray Leonard. April 6, 1987. Caesar’s Palace Outdoor Arena; Las Vegas, Nevada. Leonard shocks the world by winning a split decision over the middleweight champ Hagler, after having fought only once in five years. Hagler retires after the loss, and never laces up the gloves again.
- Michael Spinks vs. Gerry Cooney. June 15, 1987. Atlantic City Convention Hall; Atlantic City, New Jersey. Spinks chops down the much bigger Cooney, and finishes him in 5 rounds. Spinks is outweighed by 30 pounds, but dominates the much bigger Cooney, and proves he is a legitimate heavyweight at 208 pounds.
- Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Donny LaLonde. November 7, 1989. Caesar’s Palace Outdoor Arena; Las Vegas, Nevada. LaLonde, the WBC Light-Heavyweight Champ, agrees to meet Leonard at 168 lbs., but is weak and emaciated by fight time. Despite putting Leonard on the floor in the 4th round, Donny weakens, and is stopped himself in the 9th round. Not one of my favorite fights, since any concession possible is made to accommodate the egomaniac Leonard.
