Roy Jones returned to the ring on January 19, 2008 to fight Felix Trinidad at Madison Square Garden in New York. I went over my friend’s house to watch this one on pay-per-view, out of curiosity more than anything else. He got the fight for free since his wife worked for the cable company, so I had nothing to lose.
Felix Trinidad was fighting for the first time in almost three years, when he lost to Winky Wright as a middleweight. This would be his first time as a light heavyweight, and I guess Roy took the fight knowing Trinidad couldn’t hurt him.
Felix stood his ground, and fought good at times, but was dropped a couple of times as well. It was kind of pathetic to see Jones strut around like he was accomplishing something great by knocking the smaller man down, and I was hardly impressed. After twelve rounds, he won the unanimous decision, but I knew at 39, he couldn’t beat a top fighter. Like I said, I saw this one for free, because I sure wouldn’t have spent money on it.
Ten months later, on November 8th, my point was proven when Roy challenged Joe Calzaghe, who had been the super middleweight champ, at Madison Square Garden. I didn’t even waste my money on this one, and settled on catching the replay on HBO a few weeks later.
Jones managed to knock Calzaghe down hard in the opening round, but that was it. He was cut badly, hurt, and lost most every single round. He should have quit right then, but incredibly chose to continue on. He turned out to be like many ex champions. They simply stick around way too long.
