The New Face of Boxing

After his TKO win in November of 1979 over Wildredo Benitez, Sugar Ray Leonard was in the public eye more and more. With Ali talking of retirement but long past prime, the good looking talented welterweight from Palmer Park, Maryland fit the role of boxing`s new face perfectly

Leonard’s next opponent was Davey Boy Green from London, England, a tough but limited fighter at best. Sugar Ray displayed his talent for the first three rounds, before finishing his opponent of with a vicious combination in round 4. The fight had been part of a mega card broadcast live on ABC tv that culminated with Larry Holmes’ title defense against Leroy Jones in Vegas.

After the fight, talk of a mega fight with the Panamanian great Roberto Duran filled the news. It would be a super fight if it came off, but in the meantime Ray was enjoying the limelight and his new role as the face of boxing. I had a new hero in the ring as well.
