Muhammad Ali was enjoying the fame and fortune that comes with being heavyweight champion of the world. He was good looking, had a gift of gab, and was improving as a fighter by the day. After the second Liston fight, Ali signed to fight former champ Floyd Patterson in November. The bout was set for the Las Vegas Convention Center, and promised to be more competitive than the one punch lay down job by the ‘Bear’, who Ali said was now in hibernation.
Styles make fights, and Floyd Patterson knew Ali didn’t possess the punching power Liston did. His strategy was to pursue Ali and try and land his best punch, a left hook, to regain the title. It would make him the first 3 time champion of the world.
Muhammad had nicknamed Floyd the ‘Rabbit’ during the promotion of the fight, and most of the boxing public figured he would easily dispose of Patterson. Ali toyed with his prey and finished Floyd off in the 12th. Patterson claims of a bad back were hollow, and Ali showed he was the legitimate champion of the world.
