After his second defeat of Razor Ruddock on June 28, 1991, Mike Tyson signed to fight Evander Holyfield for the championship. November 8th at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas was the date and venue chosen. However, something happened that summer to change everything.
Tyson was indicted for allegedly raping an 18 year old beauty contestant at a pageant in Indianapolis he attended that summer. As fall began, the fight was still set, and both fighters began training camps. On October 19th it was announced that Tyson has supposedly hurt his abdominal muscles in training, and the fight had to be postponed. I knew the second I heard it that it was a lie, and that the ex-champion faked an injury to get himself out of the fight.
How could anyone train for the title when you are going to trial in January? It’s impossible in my opinion and the whole thing was called off. November 8th, 1991 will forever be known to me as the date of the fight that never happened.
