This is My List of My Top 5 Closed Circuit Fights

  1. Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Duran 1. June 20, 1980. Olympic Stadium; Montreal, Canada. This was my first closed circuit fight ever, and I saw it at the Tarrant County Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas. I was disappointed to see Ray lose a unanimous decision to Duran, but it was a night I would never forget.

  2. Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Duran 2. November 25, 1980. Superdome; New Orleans, Louisiana. I drove the hour from my house in south Jersey, and paid $35 to see the rematch at Atlantic City Convention Hall. Duran quitting in the 8th round was one of the most shocking moments in my life as a boxing fan, and also one of my favorite.

  3. Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Thomas Hearns. September 16, 1981. Caesar’s Palace; Las Vegas, Nevada. This meant another trip to Convention Hall in Atlantic City to see ‘The Showdown’, where I had a first row seat on the floor of the arena. Sugar Ray rallied to stop Thomas Hearns in the 14th round, and I leapt to my feet and hugged every stranger in sight to celebrate.

  4. Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Marvin Hagler. April 6, 1987. Caesar’s Palace; Las Vegas, Nevada. After seeing train for 3 days in Hilton Head, South Carolina, I was as excited as could be. To see this historic comeback bout, I made the 12 mile drive to the Spectrum in south Philadelphia. In one of my favorite fights ever, Sugar Ray shocked the world with his split decision victory over Hagler, after having fought just once in five years.

  5. Evander Holyfield vs. George Foreman. April 19, 1991. Atlantic City Convention Hall; Atlantic City, New Jersey. I got the opportunity to drive to Trump Plaza in Atlantic City to see George Foreman train for a week, and it bolstered my confidence that he could pull of the upset of the century against Evander Holyfield. Unfortunately, the drive to the Pavilion in Cherry Hill, New Jersey to see the closed circuit show ended in disappointment, when Holyfield hammered George enroute to an easy unanimous decision victory.
